UE Octoberish News

This last few weeks we have been up to all sorts of stuff.

unnamed

Language – Sidney, Lushen

This October we have been focusing on creative writing for Halloween. Each of us wrote long scary stories and 5 words scary stories. We presented both to the class. They were pretty terrifying. In spelling we have been learning tricks to remember spelling for commonly misspelled words.

Math – Grant, Ella, Trey

This October, the 4th graders have been working on percentages in real life scenarios such as: on halloween, 90% of the people in the neighborhood handed out candy.  As for the 5th graders, they have been woking on the mean, median, mode, and range.  For instance, they use a number line with random numbers in it, organize it from biggest to smallest, and work from there.  The 6th graders have just started graphing on coordinate planes.

Science/History – Jacob, Olivia, Henry

Recently in Science and History the 5th and 6th grader have been working on history folders. Every chapter is about a different event mostly in the 18th century. We’ve covered Early Explorers, 13 Colonies, and Native Americans. The 4th graders have worked on parts of a map and the history of cartography.

Did you know that Ferdinand Magellan who was credited with circumnavigating the globe first actually died along the way before the journey was complete?

Special Events – Sophie, Grayson, Payne

This month in October, the Upper Elementary has gone on 3 different field trips. We went to the Food Bank to make cereal bags. We also went to Mary’s farm and pressed apples to make apple cider. Last but not least we went to the Bradford Research Center. We did a fun corn maze and picked pumpkins for Halloween. We had Grayson’s birthday on October 10th, but celebrated on the 9th. On that same day Eagle Bear (an apache tribe native american) came to visit. Some upcoming events are: The Food Drive on the 9th, Pottery Class on the 9th as well, Holly’s last day on the 24th, and Thanksgiving break which starts on the 25th and ends on the 30th. Happy Thanksgiving!

Art – Ella

In art this month, we carved pumpkins that we got from a field trip to Bradford Research Center.  Some of the designs included skulls, ghosts, cats, and faces.  We also dried apples and potatoes to create shrunken heads, which we all had fun doing!
