October UE News

Dear UE families,

Thank you for your patience as we get our blog project underway.  We look forward to sharing many more updates throughout the school year. The students will be posting new submissions at least once a month.  We are off to a terrific start for the school year and have many exciting things on the horizon. In the coming weeks we will be pressing cider at Mary’s farm and baking cookies for the bake sale. We started a new chapter book called Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements. It is a rapid-fire narration about a charming troublemaker who turns invisible (literally). In addition to the blog we will be posting pictures to our community Flickr account or you can also follow Mary Windmiller on Twitter for updates and the weekly menu.

Cheers,

Matthew R. Hawley

Special Events – Paterson & Jacob

Since the start of school we have done many cool and fun things! Some of our favorites have been playing disc golf at Albert Oakland park and helping at the local food bank. We made 1044 buddy packs in just two hours!!! Some other things we have done as a school include the book fair, chili supper, and read, right, and run. Many parents pitched in for these events and we are all very appreciative.

Spanish & Music – Lushen, Grayson, and Trey

Recently for music we have been making diagrams of the vocal system. We have also been studying medieval instruments in music. In Spanish we have been researching famous people and learning how to ask questions to identify them. For example: Dónde víves means where do you live? Cuántos años tienes? How old are you?

Science – Henry, Sidney, & Ella

In science, we have been focusing mostly on botany. First we went on a field studies to Grindstone Nature Area to gather specimens including bark, leaves, lichen, algae, fungi, leaves, and many more. Next we put them on our botany posters. We put the definition, a fun fact, and drew some pictures for specimens we couldn’t find.

Language – Grant, Trey, & Payne

For most of August and September, we have been focusing on spelling and we just received the 2016 spelling bee list. Another part of language the we’ve been working on is typing. The website we’ve been using is Peter’s Online Typing Course which has been a great help to typing. Another daily part of our work cycle is reading. We usually spend 30 minutes on reading each afternoon which is what we call SSR (silent sustained reading.) In addition to reading we have studied parts of speech and grammar. We have also been studying the direct object, indirect object, subject and predicate which helped when we started analyzing sentences.

In other exciting news, we just received a generous donation of books WSMS families purchased from the book fair. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Meanwhile the 5th and 6th graders adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. All grade levels have been memorizing math facts such as multiplication and division. The 5th and 6th have been working with decimal fractions.
